Getting Started
Creating an Account
Sign in with your Google account or create an account with email and password. Your account is created automatically on first sign-in.
Creating a Trip
Go to the Trips tab and tap + New Trip. Give it a name, optional description, and choose a base currency (31 currencies supported). The base currency can't be changed after creation since all calculations use it.
Inviting People to a Trip
On the People tab, the trip admin can add people three ways:
- Add from friends — one-tap add for people already in your friends list
- Add by name — type a name to add someone who can claim their spot later
- Share Link — sends a link that lets anyone join the trip directly
When someone opens a share link, they land on the People tab where they can claim an existing name or add themselves.
Adding & Managing Expenses
Adding Expenses
Go to the Expenses tab, fill in the description, amount, category, and date, then tap Save Expense. The "Paid By" field is automatically set to you.
Sorting Expenses
On the Expenses tab, sort by: Recent (default, newest first), Largest, or Smallest.
Viewing Expense Details
Tap any expense to see full details including the split breakdown.
Editing and Deleting Expenses
The trip admin can edit or delete any expense. Other members can only edit or delete expenses they paid for. Edit and delete buttons appear on each expense row.
Split Types
When adding an expense, choose how to split it:
- Even — split equally among selected people (use checkboxes to include/exclude)
- By shares — assign proportional shares (e.g., 2 shares vs 1 share)
- Custom amounts — enter exact amounts per person
- By percentage — enter a percentage per person
- Itemized — add individual items and assign them to specific people
For shares, custom, and percentage splits, set someone's value to 0 to exclude them (no checkboxes needed).
Multi-Currency Expenses
If you spend in a different currency than the trip's base currency, select that currency from the dropdown. An exchange rate is fetched automatically — tap Convert to fill in the base amount. You can also override the converted amount if your card statement shows a different number.
Settling Up
Settlement Plan
The Settle tab shows an optimized plan that minimizes the number of payments needed. Each settlement row shows who pays whom and how much.
Marking Payments
Each settlement has two buttons:
- Paid — the person sending money marks this
- Received — the person receiving money marks this
When both are marked, the row greys out to show it's fully settled. A progress bar at the top tracks overall completion. The admin can toggle either button on any settlement.
Per-Person Balances
At the bottom of the Settle tab (and on the Home tab), you can see each person's paid amount, fair share, and net balance. Tap a person to see a breakdown of all expenses they're involved in.
People & Accounts
Your Identity in a Trip
When you join a trip, you need to "link" yourself to a person entry. This is how Splittery knows which expenses are yours. Your purple-highlighted chip always appears first in the people list.
You can have different display names in different trips. Use the Change link to update your name in the current trip, or Unlink to disconnect from that person entry.
Friends
Friends are added automatically when you share a trip with someone (it's mutual). Your friends list appears on the People tab under your account info. You can remove friends from there. Friends make it easy to add people to new trips — they show up in the "Add from friends" picker.
Account Settings
On the People tab, below the trip's people list, you'll find your account section with your profile photo, name, email, and friends list. You can edit your display name and sign out from here.
Managing Trips
Switching Trips
Go to the Trips tab and tap any trip to switch to it. The Home tab shows data for your currently active trip.
Renaming a Trip
Only the trip admin can rename a trip — use the edit (pencil) icon next to the trip name in the Trips tab.
Archiving Trips
Tap the archive icon to move a trip out of your active list. Archived trips are hidden by default but accessible via "Show archived" at the bottom of the Trips tab. Archiving is per-user — it doesn't affect other people in the trip.
To view an archived trip's data, unarchive it first.
Deleting Trips
Only the trip admin can delete a trip, and only from the archived list. This is a two-step safety measure: archive first, then delete. Deletion is permanent.
Roles & Permissions
Trip Admin (Owner)
The person who creates a trip is the admin. The admin can:
- Edit or delete any expense
- Add or remove people (except themselves)
- Rename the trip
- Archive/unarchive the trip
- Delete the trip (from archived state)
- Toggle any settlement paid/received flag
Trip Members
A linked member can:
- Add expenses (paid by them)
- Edit or delete their own expenses
- Share the trip link with others
- Mark "Paid" on settlements where they're the payer
- Mark "Received" on settlements where they're the payee
- Archive the trip (for their own view only)
Unlinked Users
If you're signed in but haven't linked to a person in the trip, you can view everything but not edit. You can claim an existing person entry or add yourself.
Tips & Troubleshooting
Syncing
All data syncs in real time via the cloud. If you're on multiple devices, changes appear instantly. If you lose connection temporarily, data is stored locally and syncs when you reconnect.
Share Links
Any member of a trip can share the trip link — not just the admin. When someone opens the link, they'll be prompted to sign in (if they aren't already) and then can join the trip.
Base Currency
Choose your base currency carefully when creating a trip — it can't be changed later. All balances and settlements are calculated in the base currency. Foreign currency expenses are converted at the time they're entered.
No Active Trip
If all your trips are archived, you'll see a "No active trip" message. Create a new trip or unarchive an existing one from the Trips tab.
